South Dakota has good sun (4.8 peak hours) but cheap electricity. Federal 30% ITC is the main incentive. Black Hills Energy and rural electric cooperatives have varying net metering rules.
Use the calculator below — your state is already selected. Adjust your monthly electric bill and system cost for a South Dakota-specific payback estimate.

Estimates only. Real solar quotes depend on your roof, shading, local installer pricing and utility net-metering policy. The 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025, so no federal credit is applied. A lease or PPA may still capture it through the installer under Section 48E for systems placed in service by the end of 2027. Not financial advice.
Cumulative savings vs. system cost
When the green line crosses the dashed cost line, you've broken even.
South Dakota solar specifics
1. Federal tax credit (expired)
The 30% federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025 under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. A homeowner buying a system outright in 2026 gets no federal credit. A solar lease or power purchase agreement can still capture the 30% credit under Section 48E — the installer claims it and passes the value on through lower payments — for systems placed in service by the end of 2027.
2. State and utility programs
SD has utility-by-utility net metering variation. Black Hills Energy and rural co-ops have varying programs.
2026 South Dakota solar economics
Typical 7 kW system: gross ~$19,600. With no federal credit available in 2026, net cost is the full ~$19,600. Annual production ~10,424 kWh. Annual savings at $0.12/kWh: ~$1,107. Simple payback ~18 years, up from about 12 when the 30% credit applied.
How to use the South Dakota solar calculator above
- The state is pre-selected. Adjust if needed.
- Enter your typical monthly electric bill (averaged across the year).
- The calculator auto-fills your state's average electricity rate and peak sun hours — override the electricity rate with your real $/kWh from your bill if you know it.
- Adjust the system cost per watt based on quotes from local installers. South Dakota averages are typically within the $2.50–$3.50/W range for cash installs.
- The output shows estimated system size, net cost after federal and state credits, year-1 savings, and 25-year cumulative savings.
